Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is in the Nakasongola district, which is in the central part of Uganda. It is about 164 square kilometers away from Kampala, which is the country’s main city. Also, this Ziwa Rhino refuge is about 70 square kilometers in size. It was officially designated as a sanctuary in 2005 so that an area can be protected that will be a natural home for the Rhino species. These Rhino species live in a protected area with a 2-meter electric fence around it.
This has helped a lot to stop things like hunting, which has always caused the number of Rhinos to drop. In addition, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary began its work to protect rhinos with just six animals. Four of them came from Solio Ranch in Kenya, and the other two were moved there from Disney Animal Kingdom in Florida, USA.
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda that is famous for housing Rhino species. It is home to over 32 white rhinos and is run by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, a government agency program whose job it is to protect all of Uganda’s wildlife resources. In addition, the Rhinoceros species is one of Uganda’s “big five” animals, which has brought a lot of people to the country and helped the tourism business.

A lot of white rhinos can always be seen by tourists strolling through the open fields in the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. But this sanctuary is home to more than just white rhinoceroses. When people visit, they can see other animals like hippos, antelopes, giraffes, crocodiles, monkeys, and more because it is home to over 40 mammal species. The sanctuary has about 76 park rangers or guides whose job it is to show tourists around and keep an eye on things 24 hours a day to make sure the rhinos and other animals are safe.
When tourists are visiting the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, they can do a lot of other fun things that will give them new experiences and lasting memories. A lot of the time, they can even use their phones and cameras to take pictures and movies to send home to their families. Guided nature walks with park rangers are some of these activities. Others include canoeing, bird watching (the rhino tracking safari is great for bird lovers because they get to see a lot of different bird species), hiking, shoebill trekking, and many more.
Tourists who want to track rhinos in the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary always have to pay a fee of about 50 USD per person who is not from East Africa and about 40 USD per person who is from East Africa.
