Gorilla trekking in Uganda: One of the world’s most remarkable and fascinating tourist destinations, Uganda offers the most thrilling and amazing mountain gorilla trekking safari. Thanks to its supernatural abilities, Uganda is one of the few nations that is home to endangered mountain gorillas. In addition to being home to mountain gorillas, Uganda is also home to the largest population of mountain gorillas, believed to number 400.
In Uganda, mountain gorilla trekking is conducted in two national parks—Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Forest National Park—that are home to mountain gorillas.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Situated in Kanungu district in southwestern Uganda on the edge of the rift valley, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO natural world heritage site. It is the most biologically diverse rainforest in Uganda, with elevations ranging from 1160 meters to 2607 meters above sea level.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was gazetted and created as a national park in 1991. It covers 321 square kilometers and is home to both lowland and montane forests. The Ivi, Munyaga, Ihihizo, Ishasha, and Ntengyrere Rivers flow into Lake Edward from these deep forests.
Numerous mountain gorillas may be found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which is renowned for providing the greatest mountain gorilla trekking experience in Africa. These mountain gorillas in Bwindi were educated to become used to and at ease with human presence via a method known as habituation.
There are 19 mountain gorilla families in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where mountain gorilla trekking is conducted. These families are spread throughout four different sectors: Ruhija, Buhoma, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Among these families are
Mubare family of gorillas
The Mubare gorilla family, which is trekking in the Buhoma sector and has nine individuals and one silverback, is among the first and oldest families to have been habituated in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. They were habituated in 1991. Near the park’s headquarters, the Mubare gorilla family is hiked.
Family of Rushegura Gorillas
The Buhoma area is also home to the Rushegura gorilla family, which was established in 2002 and has 19 members, including one silverback. Mwirimu, a dominating silverback, is the head of the Rushegura gorilla family.
The Habinyanja family of gorillas
The Habinyanja gorilla family, which was habituated in 1997 and now has 18 members and two silverbacks, is an incredible family that was discovered and traveled in Buhoma.
The Katwe Gorilla Family
The Katwe gorilla family, which has seven members and one dominant silverback, is a recently habituated family in the Buhoma region.
The family of Nkuringo gorillas
The 19-member Nkuringo gorilla family, which includes two silverbacks, is located in the Nkuringo sector. A powerful silverback Nkuringo, who passed away in April 2008, was the family’s former leader.
Family of Bushaho Gorillas
The southern section of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Nkuringo is home to the eight-member Bushaho Gorilla Family, which is led by the dominant silverback Bahati.
The Bitukura family of gorillas
The 14 members of the Bitukura gorilla family, which includes 14 silverbacks, are trekking and located in the Ruhija area of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The Mishaya family of gorillas
The seven members of the Mishaya gorilla family, which is hiked and located in the Rushaga region of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, are led by a dominating silverback.
The Oruzogo family of gorillas
The Ruhija region of the park is home to the 23-member Oruzogo gorilla family, which includes one silverback. In 2011, the Oruzogo gorilla family became accessible for hiking.
Gamily Nshongi Gorilla
The Rushaga region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to the Nshongi Gorilla Gamily, an incredible family of 18 primates that began trekking in 2009.
The family of Kahungye gorillas
The 13-member Kahungye gorilla family, which includes three silverbacks, is spotted and hiked in the Rushaga area of the impenetrable national park of Bwindi. This family, which is led by the dominant Rumansi silverback, was available for trekking in 2011.
The family of Bweza gorillas
The Bweza gorilla family consists of nine members, with the dominant silverback Bweza serving as the group’s leader. Bweza, a latent silverback, broke away from the Nshongi gorilla family to form his own family, which bears his name. The Rushaga area is home to the Bweza gorilla family.
The family of Busingye gorillas
The nine-member Busingye gorilla family, which split off from the Kahungye family, is located and hiked in the Rushaga section of the impenetrable Bwindi National Park. The family is led by a silverback.
Family of Kyaguriro Gorillas
The most valuable gorilla family in the park is the Kyaguriro family, which has 15 members and was the first to be habituated and made accessible for trekking in 1999. The Max Plank Institute has set aside this family for research and study reasons. Since the death of its powerful leader Rukina, who replaced Zeus in 2015, the Kyaguriro gorilla family has had many changes in leadership. Rukara is a powerful silverback who now leads the group.

The 21 members of the Bikyingi gorilla family, together with one silverback named Bikyingi, are the source of the group’s name. The family is interesting to see because of its amiable leaders. The Rushaga region is home to the Bikyingi gorilla family, which is traveled there.
The family of Christmas Gorillas
Along with the Katwe gorilla family, the Christmas gorilla family is the newest to be made available for trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The family has nine members, with one dominating silverback named Christmas serving as the family’s leader. The Nkuringo sector is where this family was located and hiked.
Family of Mukiza Gorillas
Ten individuals make up the Mukiza gorilla family, which is located and hiked in the Ruhija section of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The family’s leader is a silverback. This family. The Kyaguliro gorilla family broke off from this family.
Family of Kutu Gorillas
The eight members of the Kutu gorilla family, led by a silverback, are located and hiked in the Rushaga area of the impenetrable national park of Bwindi.
The Mucunguzi family of gorillas
In the Bweza gorilla family, there are frequent battles amongst the eight members of the Mucunguzi gorilla family, which are mostly female. A young silverback named Mucunguzi broke away from the Bweza group to form his own family, which is where the family got its name.
Although the aforementioned families are the only ones available for trekking, the number of gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park continues to grow as a result of the birth of new gorilla infants.
Gorilla National Park in Mgahinga
The second location in Uganda where mountain gorilla trekking expeditions are conducted is Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Located in the Kisoro district in the southwestern part of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a comparatively small national park, spanning 33.7 square kilometers. The large Virunga conservation region, which includes the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the Virunga National Park of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda, includes the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
The Nyakagezi gorilla family is the only gorilla family found in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where mountain gorilla trekking is conducted.
The family of Nyakagezi gorillas
The nine members of the Nyakagezi gorilla family—two silverbacks, three adult females, two juniors, and two infants—are nomadic and sometimes go into Rwandan woodlands or Volcanoes National Park.
Note: All visitors are welcome to trek with mountain gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park throughout the year, but in order to participate in the thrilling adventure, you must have a mountain gorilla trekking permit.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority sells mountain gorilla trekking permits, which cost $800 USD and may be bought directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority or via a travel agency. Due to the great demand, it is preferable to purchase the permit many months before to the exact date of your trip.
