The safari vehicles you journey in might come with an inverter for recharging, but it is wise not to depend solely on this. Always make sure to have extra batteries for your cameras and videos at the ready. Charging directly from the car battery is possible, but you will need to bring your own equipment for the task.
Film, tapes, batteries, and other essentials may not be easily accessible in Uganda or Rwanda – make sure to pack plenty for your journey.
Many lodges rely on solar power, which means they may have limited or no facilities for charging batteries. It is wise to come prepared with extras, just in case. Charge up whenever you can along your journey – don’t wait until you’re down to your last battery!

When it comes to capturing stunning images of gorillas, a 35 – 70 mm zoom or a 50 mm fixed lens typically does the trick. However, consider bringing along a longer lens, keeping in mind that you might encounter low light situations. Opt for high-speed film (200-400 ASA or higher), since flash photography is prohibited. Be sure to familiarize yourself with your camera beforehand so you can easily turn it off manually when needed.
For game and bird photography, a longer lens is definitely advisable, with an ideal range of 80-300mm.
