Guidelines for Gorilla Trekking: Essential Do’s & Don’ts – Uganda and Rwanda Guidelines for embarking on a thrilling gorilla trekking experience
Essential guidelines for an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience. For those eager to embark on a thrilling gorilla trekking experience, here are the essential guidelines and do’s and don’ts provided by the Uganda Wildlife Authority that you should keep in mind. They apply as outlined in the printed leaflet provided by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. (Gorilla guidelines)
Before setting off on your gorilla trekking adventure.
Only 8 visitors can embark on an exhilarating journey to encounter a group of habituated mountain gorillas each day. This reduces the likelihood of behavioral disruption for the gorilla and lowers the risk of exposure to diseases carried by humans.
Make sure to wash your hands before embarking on your journey to see the gorillas. As you journey towards the gorillas, remember to maintain a hushed tone. You will have the chance to witness the vibrant bird life and diverse wildlife thriving in the forest.
Keep the park clean and free from litter. Everything you take into the forest must be brought back with you.
You will be led to the spot where the guides tracked the gorilla just the day before. From there, you will embark on a journey along the gorilla’s trail to discover their whereabouts. Keep an eye out for the gorilla’s nests as you journey through.
As you draw near to the mountain gorillas, the guides will prepare you for the experience ahead.
When you find yourself in the presence of the gorillas, it is essential to maintain a distance of 7 meters (21 feet) at all times. The farther back you are, the more laid-back the group will feel.
It’s essential to remain close together when you’re in the presence of the gorillas.
Whisper your words softly at all times. Feel free to ask the guide any questions you may have.
Refrain from smoking, drinking, or eating in the vicinity of the gorillas. Indulging in food or beverages can lead to the chance of morsels or droplets escaping, potentially heightening the risk of spreading illnesses.
At times, the gorillas come charging in. Observe the guide’s approach (lower yourself gently, avoid direct eye contact with the gorillas, and patiently allow the animals to move by). Refrain from trying to escape, as that will heighten the danger.
Using flash photography is not allowed! When capturing images, proceed with a sense of wonder and mindfulness.
Keep your hands away from the gorillas. They are creatures of the untamed wilderness.
Your encounter with the gorillas lasts for a thrilling hour. However, if the gorillas show signs of agitation or nervousness, the guide will conclude the visit ahead of schedule.
After the visit, maintain a quiet demeanor until you are 200 meters away from the gorillas.
Essential guidelines for well-being
Keep in mind that mountain gorillas are highly vulnerable to human illnesses. The following guidelines are designed to reduce the potential risks your visit may present to them.
Honor the restrictions set on the daily visitor count for the gorillas. This reduces the chances of spreading illness and alleviates pressure on the team.
If you are feeling unwell or have a contagious illness, please consider staying back. A different visit will be set up for you, or your money will be returned.
If you find yourself needing to cough or sneeze while in the presence of the gorillas, kindly turn your head away and cover your nose and mouth to help reduce the spread of any bacteria or viruses.
Maintain a distance of 7 meters (21 feet) from the gorillas at all times. This is to safeguard them from acquiring human illnesses.
Be sure to take all your rubbish (like food wrappers) with you when you leave the park; stray items can attract unwanted issues or harmful elements.
If you find yourself in need of a restroom while exploring the forest, do not hesitate to ask the guide to help you out with his panga. Ensure that the entire space is 30cm deep and complete the filling once you are done.
