3-Day Big Five and Murchison Falls Safari

Overview

With the possibility of seeing the Big Five (rhino, elephant, water buffalo, lion, and leopard) in their natural habitat, this is a quick getaway overland trip to Murchison Falls National Park. “Overland” because we camp out of our specialized RV base vehicle; “adventure” since we add in a night off-grid in the wilds with a ranger. See our reviews and book with confidence. Small groups travel in the basic vehicle; parties of four or more in the second car with autonomous drive option.

Trip Itinerary ( Detailed Safari )

Day 1: Rhinos and Murchison Falls.

If your preferred departure time is 8 a.m. from Entebbe or 9 a.m. from Kampala, you will stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on your way to Lowero Market. While there, you will learn about this remarkable effort to return these amazing animals to the wild and go on a guided walk with the white rhinos.

Lunch will be at Ziwa, then you will be transferred from Masindi to Murchison Falls National Parks. At the height of the Murchison Falls, the most strong on Earth, the River Nile falls into a barely 7-metre wide canyon.

You will then have a first-night camping and an introduction to our amazing camp layout at Red Chili Rest Camp. Under the banda, there are choices for camp supper and beverages as well as at the restaurant. You will have lodge fire and views over the Nile basin.

Accommodation: Budget camping

Day 2: Boat Cruise, Chill Out, and Venture into the Wilderness.

Early breakfast at Red Chili then a boat safari to the foot of the strong Murchison Falls. Elephants, hippos, water buffalo, and great birdlife abound on the Nile banks: kingfishers, weaver birds, fish eagles.

Overlooking the Nile, you will go to the well-known Paraa Lodge for lunch and a leisurely noon break around the pool.

You will gather the ranger and leave mid-afternoon for the safari in savannahs. You will enter the bush to set your tent near the Nile Delta by Lake Albert. Antelopes, elephants, giraffes, water buffalos, and plenty of birds abound in Uganda; over 1000 species call their home.

We will gather firewood as we go and establish camp in the middle of nowhere, with a view of Lake Albert. After doing an evening wildlife drive with the greatest opportunity to see a lion and maybe a leopard, you will return to camp for BBQ and beverages around the fire. Though we have a foldable toilet seat and a hot shower, this is wild camping.

Accommodation: Budget camping

Day 3: Extended Game Drive and Home for Tea and Medals.

With a cup of tea, you break camp before sunrise and set out for a dawn game safari, another fantastic opportunity to view lion and leopard seeking for breakfast. After some time along the Nile, you will stop for yours for a fry-up or anything you choose.

You will have a little walking safari with the ranger to see if you can see other hippos and maybe some crocs while we are putting things up. You will travel over Murchison after breakfast to reach the far northeastern gate.

These days, this is a long and seldom traveled route into an area known for elephants.

You leave the park and start the road home across the Nile rapids at Karuma Bridge.

Arriving back at Entebbe, or Kampala if you would want, the medals are only a T-shirt, sticker, and certificate.
